Arson

A.R.S. § 13-1703 and 1704

Arson in Arizona is a serious criminal offense that involves intentionally or recklessly setting fire to any structure, forest land, or property. There are different degrees of arson based on the type of property involved:


  1. First-Degree Arson: This occurs when a person knowingly or recklessly causes damage by fire or explosion to any structure, whether occupied or not, or to any property with the intent to defraud. It also includes causing damage to any structure or property valued at $1,000 or more. 
  2. Second-Degree Arson: This occurs when a person knowingly or recklessly causes damage by fire or explosion to any property, other than a structure or vehicle. 


Arson is a serious offense. First-degree arson can carry a penalty of up to 7 to 21 year in prison, in addition to fines, restitution to victims for property damage or loss, and other court-ordered penalties.
